As with any hack, it is unclear exactly what was accessed, and hackers could have also acquired private user data. If this affected GTA Online it could put in-game purchases, currently making Rockstar almost a billion dollars per year, at risk. Malicious actors could use this code to find exploits within Rockstar’s games. The source code being accessed has more significant implications. Somewhat ironically, the content that fans have paid most attention to – the gameplay footage – is the least damaging for Rockstar, amounting to simply a PR blow. An array of content was accessed, included source code from GTA V and VI, development assets, and alpha gameplay footage. GTA developer Rockstar Games confirmed: “We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorised third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto”. This week gaming entered leak season, with large amounts of content unexpectedly released for two major upcoming titles: Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA) and Diablo IV.
